Mondays on Mothering — What a Two Year Old Will Say

Mondays on Mothering

This past week, my two year old settled in for a very long bout with a cold.  He was such a cutie with a cold!  I felt so very sorry for him, but I could not help but smile when he tried to wipe his own nose, covered his little mouth for every cough, and spoke in his hoarse little voice.  It was sad and cute all at the same time.  Sad, because I had just recovered and I knew exactly how he felt.  Cute, because he handled it all with such cheerfulness and adorable actions. About halfway through the week, he had a day when he was just silly.  He was clearly not feeling well and still cuddly, but he was goofy all day long.  In the morning while I was trying to school the older children, this little guy kept coming up to cuddle on my lap and every single time he asked to be tickled.  Then, he would hop down and play for ten minutes before coming back.   Finally, I had about a half hour break from this routine.  I started checking math and grammar.  While I was checking my older son’s math; my two year old returned and settled on my lap, stretching out with his back against my pregnancy belly and his head on my shoulder.  He didn’t say anything, just sat their quietly while I finished.  After a bit, I said “Caleb, what in the world are you doing?” with a laugh.  I couldn’t figure out why he was stretching so much.  Very cutely, and with much emphasis on the second word he said, “I *just* want to be tickled!!!” I just love listening to my two year olds chatter as they learn to talk.  They are always cute, and they understand and can say so much more then I expect.

The important thing for a Mom with a two year old is — you have to listen!  That’s the hard part :).

What brings you joy as a mother?  What do you love about being a mother?  What makes you smile?

Celebrate the Joy!

I love rainbow shoes now. Check out David’s new shoes. These were the ones that replaced his “Fast shoes.” Yes, he has adjectives for everything.
